Q.
Does my taking water from a well to water my plants, trees, grass and
flowers lower the water table and/or deprive others of water?
A:There is approximately
100 times more usable fresh water below ground in aquifiers than above
ground in our nation’s rivers and streams. Your impact on others
is less using ground water than if you hoarded precipitation and recycled
grey water for the same purpose which would otherwise feed our rivers
and lakes. “No matter where on Earth you are standing, chances are
that, at some depth, the ground below you is saturated with water. Of
all the freshwater on Earth, less than 0.3 percent is contained in rivers
and lakes—yet rivers and lakes are not only the water we are most
familiar with, it is also where most of the water we use today, in our
everyday lives, comes from.”
